Der große amerikanische Erzbischof Dr. Dr. Fulton J. Sheen hat in seinem Buch „Der Kommunismus und das Gewissen der westlichen Welt“ prophetisch auf die apokalyptischen Erschütterungen verwiesen, die wir gegenwärtig durchleben.
Er spricht von der „Versuchung, eine neue Religion anzunehmen ohne das Kreuz, eine Liturgie ohne jenseitige Welt, eine Religion zur Vernichtung der Religion oder eine Politik, die eine Religion ist – eine, die dem Kaiser auch gibt, was Gottes ist“ (S. 11).
Der Erzbischof macht deutlich, dass diese Agenda in Verbindung steht mit dem Kommen des Antichrist, der die wahre Religion zu zerstören sucht, um sich selbst auf den Thron zu setzen und anbeten zu lassen. „Er wird eine Gegenkirche errichten, welche die Kirche nachäfft; denn der Teufel ist der Affe Gottes. Sie wird alle Merkmale und Bräuche der Kirche haben, aber mit umgekehrten Vorzeichen und ihres göttlichen Inhalts entleert. Es wird einen mystischen Leib des Antichrist geben, der in allen Äußerlichkeiten dem Mystischen Leib Christi gleichen wird“ (S. 12).
Die Heilige Schrift spricht deutlich vom Erscheinen des Widersachers und seinem Eindringen in den Tempel, von der großen Apostasie, den trügerischen Zeichen und der Verführung (vgl. 2 Thess 2,3–12). Der Katechismus stellt dazu fest: „Vor dem Kommen Christi muss die Kirche eine letzte Prüfung durchmachen, die den Glauben vieler erschüttern wird. Die Verfolgung, die ihre Pilgerschaft auf Erden begleitet, wird das ‚Mysterium der Bosheit‘ enthüllen: Ein religiöser Lügenwahn bringt den Menschen um den Preis ihres Abfalls von der Wahrheit eine Scheinlösung ihrer Probleme“ (KKK 675).
Das Kommen des Antichrist wird vorbereitet von seinem Vorläufer, dem Falschen Propheten (vgl. Offb 19,20). In der Apokalypse heißt es: „Ein anderes Tier stieg aus der Erde herauf. Es hatte zwei Hörner wie ein Lamm, aber es redete wie ein Drache“ (Offb 13,11). Das ist ein Hinweis auf die Hierarchie der Kirche, in der die Mitra – mit zwei Hörnern – die Fülle des Priestertums anzeigt. Das Tier, das aus der Erde heraufsteigt, sieht aus wie ein Diener Christi, des Lammes, ist aber ein Handlanger Satans, des Drachen. Der Falsche Prophet ist der pseudo-religiöse Anführer der Antikirche. Durch gravierende Häresien und abscheuliche Sakrilegien treibt er die große Apostasie von der Spitze her voran. Er täuscht und betrügt die Erdenbewohner (vgl. Offb 13,14) und will die Menschen zur Anbetung des Antichrist führen (vgl. Offb 13,12).
Diese Entwicklung beschreibt Prof. Dr. Ivan Pojavnik in einem seiner Werke: „Die Antikirche bleibt nach außen hin in der Katholischen Kirche, während sie innerlich im neuen Grab der unteren Hemisphäre der Menschheit ruht. Die Antikirche ist die Trägerin des falschen Christus. Sie untergräbt die Kirche ‚von innen heraus‘“ (Das Mysterium des Konzils, S. 219).
Der Autor geht auf die oben erwähnte Stelle aus dem 2. Thessalonicherbrief ein und spricht von einer stufenweisen Dynamik dieses Vorgangs, der auf die Inthronisierung des Antichrist abzielt: „Die Prophezeiung des Apostels Paulus über den gesetzwidrigen Menschen im Heiligtum Gottes – das die Kirche Christi ist – bezieht sich auf eine bestimmte historische Person. Diese Person wird der Antichrist sein als größter Widersacher Christi in der Geschichte und damit als seine größte Verfälschung. […] Die absteigende Spirale der ‚geheimen Macht der Gesetzwidrigkeit‘ hat eine eigene Dynamik, die schrittweise ihrem Höhepunkt zustrebt: Sie bereitet die Inthronisierung des bösen Menschen – des Antichrist – im Heiligtum der Kirche vor“ (ebd., S. 219f.). Dies werde dann der Gipfel des großen Abfalls sein.
Prof. Dr. Pojavnik stellt vor diesem Hintergrund folgende wichtige und wesentliche Unterscheidung heraus: „Der Antichrist wird das Oberhaupt der Antikirche sein, nicht aber das Haupt der wahren Kirche, die Christus für immer treu bleiben wird. Der Antichrist wird hingegen versuchen, die wahre Kirche vollständig und endgültig zu zerstören“ (ebd., S. 220).
Daher schauen wir auf zu Jesus Christus, unserem Gott, dem König der ewigen Herrlichkeit und wahren Sieger, und machen uns in einem Akt vertrauensvoller Anbetung den biblischen Ruf der Christen zu eigen: Komm, Herr Jesus – Maranatha!

The Abyss of the anti-church
In his book Communism and the Conscience of the West, the great American Archbishop Dr. Dr. Fulton J. Sheen prophetically pointed out the apocalyptic convulsions which we are currently witnessing. He speaks of the “temptation to adopt a new religion without the cross, a liturgy without a supernatural world, a religion for the destruction of religion or a policy which is a religion – one that gives to Caesar also that which is God’s” (p. 11 [in the German version of the Sheen book]).
The Archbishop makes it clear that this ongoing agenda is linked with the coming of the antichrist who seeks to destroy the true religion in order to place himself on the throne and to let himself be adored. “He will set up a counter-church, which will mimic the Church because the devil is God’s ape. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. There will be a mystical body of the antichrist, which will resemble in all its externals the Mystical Body of Christ” (p. 12).
Holy Scripture speaks clearly of the appearance of the adversary and of his entering into the Temple during the Great Apostasy, of the deceitful signs and of the temptation (see Thess 2:3-12). The catechism says on this matter: “Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers. The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth will unveil the ‚mystery of iniquity‘ in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh” (CCC 675).
The coming of the antichrist is being prepared by his false prophet (see Apoc 19:20). In the Apocalypse, it says: “Then I saw another beast that rose out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon“ (Apoc 13:11). This is a reference to the hierarchy of the Church, in which the mitre – with its two horns – represents the fullness of the priesthood. The animal which rises out of the earth looks like a servant of Christ, of the Lamb, but is a henchman of satan, of the dragon. The false prophet is the pseudo-religious leader of the anti-church. He is promoting the Great Apostasy from the top with the help of grave heresies and despicable sacrileges. He deceives and cheats the inhabitants of the earth (see Apoc 13:14) and wants to lead man to the veneration of the antichrist (see Apoc 13:12).
Prof. Dr. Ivan Pojavnik[1] describes this development in his book, as follows: “The anti-church remains externally in the Catholic Church, while on the inside, it rests in the new grave of the lower hemisphere of humanity. The anti-church is the bearer of the false christ. It undermines the Church ‚from within’” (Das Mysterium des Konzils [The Mysterium of the Council], first volume, p. 219). The author discusses the above-mentioned passage from the Second Letter to the Thessalonians and speaks of a step-by-step dynamic of this development which aims at the enthronement of the antichrist: “The prophecy of St. Paul concerning the unlawful man in the Sanctuary of God – which is the Church of Christ – refers to a certain historic person. This person will be the antichrist as the greatest adversary of Christ in history and thus as His greatest falsification. [….] The spiral downward of the ’secret power of lawlessness‘ has its own dynamics which step-by-step reaches its climax: it prepares the enthronement of the evil man – the antichrist – in the sanctuary of the Church” (Ibid., p. 219 seq.) This is then said to be the climax of the Great Apostasy. With this background, Prof. Dr. Pojavnik makes the following important and essential distinction: “The antichrist will be the head of the anti-church, but not the head of the true Church which will be loyal to Christ forever. The antichrist, however, will try to destroy the true Church completely and definitively” (Ibid., p. 220).
Therefore, let us look upon Jesus Christ, our God, the King of Eternal Glory and True Victor, and let us appropriate in an act of trusting adoration the Biblical call of the Christians: Come, Lord Jesus, Maranatha!
